What is a Dalgona Coffee?

Whipped coffee, or its more popular name Dalgona, is a foamy iced coffee drink created by using coffee, sugar, water, milk, and a lot of arm power. It has been around for a while but became more popular when used in a trend on TikTok & Instagram with the hashtag  #dalgonacoffeechallenge.

It has now made its way around the world and become a very popular coffee drink. The best part about this tasty coffee concoction though is the Dalgon spinoffs that have been created. People have been experimenting and making many different variations of the Dalgona coffee, which is what we will cover today.

These recipes are perfect to try at home, on summer days, and even as a fun experiment with kids, although you should probably use decaf coffee in that instance.

The Reason Behind the Famous TikTok Coffee

Remember when the whole pandemic started? While the whole world suddenly came to a standstill to help fight the spread of Corona, people started to divert their attention from being quarantined by watching DIY and life hacks on TikTok to kill boredom and time.

This is when the whole hashtag #dalgonacoffeechallenge started to dominate all forms of social media in March while being stuck at home. People were making their coffees and posting them on social media, with the goal to make the most visually appealing and nicest tasting Dalgonas.

What Made Dalgona Coffee a Trend?

Dalgona became a coffee trend during the start of the pandemic when South Korean actor Jung II Woo uploaded a video on YouTube of himself trying some whipped coffee in Macau. Viewers commented that the coffee bore a resemblance to a Korean-style honeycomb toffee called dalgona candy.

From there, the internet and social media took over and did its thing.

So what do you need to make a Dalgona coffee?

Essentials of Making Dalgona Coffee

  • 2 Tbsp Hot Water
  • 2 Tbsp Sugar
  • 2 Tbsp Instant Coffee Powder
  • 1 Cup Milk

How to Make a Dalgona Coffee?
